iPhone HD rumors start to fly

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is developing two next generation iPhone models, one of which would cause the end of the iPhone’s AT&T exclusivity.

The iPhone 4G could be a WiMAX enabled handset that would be developed for the CDMA network (used by Verizon, Sprint and other carriers worldwide), while the summer update of iPhone OS 4 could introduce a brand new object of desire, the iPhone HD.

Third-party multitasking is one of the most awaited features that iPhone OS 4 should bring, but rumors about hardware specs are heating up.

John Gruber from Daring Fireball suggests that the iPhone HD would employ a 960 x 640 display, but personally I find it hard to imagine such a high pixel density even on a 4.1”-4.3” large screen (the iPhone 3Gs display is 3.5” and has a 480 x 320 resolution at 163 ppi, the iPad has a 9.7 inch, 1024 x 768 display at 132 ppi). Probably an 800 x 480 resolution could be more realistic and equally stunning.

The Apple A4 system-on-a-chip, similar to the one featured on the iPad, would power the new iPhone HD. A second front-facing camera would make video conferencing possible on the iPhone HD and confine the iPad to non-business usage.

SmartPhoneMedic posted a video on YouTube showing what could be the iPhone 4G LCD. Check it out and you decide whether it’s fake or not!
