Look Mom, No Keys: Microsoft Ads Mobile Voice Search

Things are really revving up in the mobile industry this week, and this time it is Microsoft that has made a move. It appears that the Google/Microsoft battle has spilled out into the streets as mobile phones (smartphones in particular) garner all of the attention. With the release of Windows Mobile 6.5, Sprint has launched the SPH-i350 Intrepid from Samsung, which utilizes Microsoft’s previously acquired Tellme technology to operate the phone and search Bing by voice. In the following video, you see how the user is able to send a text, search for a local restaurant, and call his friend all via voice commands.

It is estimated that 40% of mobile phone use is done while multitasking so this is a natural move from Microsoft. Although vopice search has been done by Google nearly a year ago with iPhone’s ability to search Goole using voice commands. But this is a competitive market and competing companies are constantly ripping each other off. It’s not as though Microsoft has copied Google’s voice search word for word. Microsoft has upped the ante as the Tellme technology allows for not just internet search, but overall phone management. As shown on the video, texts and calls are hand free as well, so users can navigate themselves through the busy streets instead of pausing to text or dial.

This service has only been rolled out on Sprint’s Samsung Intrepid so far but, “with more phones than computers in people’s lives, there’s more demand than ever for simple, fast ways to get what you want, when you want it.” So I’m sure we can expect to find this service on a range of new phones over the coming months.
