Building My Own Web Presence – Episode 01: The Journey Begins
Your Mom is on Facebook? Your Dad posts baby pictures of you on Flickr and shares them with his friends on Twitter? And your little cousin posts videos of his increasing skater skills on YouTube?
It’s a likely scenario and shows how being present online is becoming increasingly important. Thinking about the professional aspect, if your entire family is online it is more than likely that your future employer will be as well.
If you’re applying for a job, your own website would be the perfect way to present yourself, your skills, your experience and to show that you’re part of and savvy in the ever increasing online universe. Plus, it’s so much cooler than the standard black and white CV in .doc or .pdf.
But to be honest, how many people actually have the skills, the time or the money to create their own professional looking website from scratch? I know I don’t – basic HTML skills, some time and ideas maybe but definitely no money.
Since I’m already on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and most other random social media platforms, wouldn’t it be great to incorporate all or most of my activities on one single website? And maybe also start my personal blog there or post the pictures from my travels to South Asia?
Maybe if I just asked the Twitterverse I would probably get a lot of useful suggestions, but then again, I could also ask my tech savvy(er) friends to design a website for me and figure out where to buy a domain and where to host it. But that would be a bit like cheating, wouldn’t it?
So the question is what happens if you actually go out and venture yourself? I’m thinking that there must be an easy way to create, improve and manage a nice website for free (!) that doesn’t look like a five year old went crazy on Paint. Maybe there are hidden treasures that are just waiting to be discovered. So let’s see where the journey leads us.
