Building My Own Web Presence – Epsiode 03: Social Network and the 7 Widgets

After going through the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of building my own web presence I have now reconsidered using social networks.

I ruled out the classic ones like Facebook and MySpace as they are quite limited in regards to personalising your own profile. A friend of mine actually reminded me of Ning, the social network that lets you create social networks. Even though I have signed up to Ning ages ago, I have to admit, I have not realised its full potential up until now.

Creating a network is a matter of a mouse click followed by various drag-and-drop options to personalise the structure and layout. Apart from the main page, I decided to include a page for a blog and one for photos.

One of the best features are the HTML-editable text boxes which can be added practically anywhere. These text boxes make it really easy to embed widgets in a matter of seconds. Something I had not found as straight forward while trying out the other options I wrote about previously.

On my search for suitable and – as always – free widgets, I spend more time than I should have surfing through the great selection of Widgetbox.
Tempted to include all sorts of fun widgets like Super Mario I exercised some self control – and trust me that was hard to do – and went for the 2 more professional ones I was looking for. One to include links to my various other profiles and one to stream my Twitter updates.

A couple of warm words of welcome and finished my own social network including my own background, profile picture, widgets, blog and pictures.

Not bad, not bad at all. Especially, because it’s not terribly spammed with ads either. But still there’s something missing. Pacman maybe?
