Facebook and The Rise of the Third Screen
As mentioned in a previous post, “The mobile phone is for the next decade what the computer has been for the last two or three,”. A recent study done by Coda Research Consultancy estimates that smartphone penetration will reach 40% in the US by 2012. Among the EU5 (UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy), smartphone adoption has seen a 32% increase over the last year and now boasts 51.6 million subscribers. This is a staggering rate of growth and along with it comes an increasing percentage of people who access and social networks from their mobile. The chart displayed bellow highlights some extremely interesting facts about how phones are changing the way we consume social media. It highlights that 25%, or 100 million people, use Facebook from their mobile. Furthermore, those who do are far more active than users who access Facebook form their PCs. The fact that the number of mobile users who accessed Facebook more than doubled from Jan 2009 to Jan 2010 month on month, coupled with the fact that Facebook is now overtaking Google in terms of traffic, tells me that we are definitely witnessing a shift towards the mobile consumption of digital content. But have a look for yourself:
