Facebook overtakes Google as most visited US website
Last week Facebook.com was the number one most visited site in the US, surpassing Google.com. The same happened during the first weekend of March and last year’s Christmas holiday season, but the chart published by Hitwise doesn’t take other Google properties, like Gmail and Google News, into account when measuring the weekly market share of visits in the US for Google.com.
Nevertheless, it’s important to notice that Google.com experienced a 9% increase of visits in the last year, while Facebook’s increase is a stunning 185%. It appears that Facebook is not stealing traffic from Google Search, but it’s growing 20 times faster during the same time frame.

Another interesting chart from Compete.com shows that in terms of engagement, or attention, measured as “time spent online”, Facebook gets the biggest slice of the pie: In January 11.6% of all time spent online was spent on Facebook, more than the time spent on Yahoo! and Google combined.
