If You Are not Coming to the News, the News Are Coming to You!
My grandfather, like I am, is a complete news junkie. The major difference between him and me in this field is that he does it the old way: he gets the newspaper every morning and watches the news on TV. So basically he has to do something to make the news reach him. Maybe I am lazier than he is, but I prefer a different approach. I want the information to reach me, so here are three ways to get what matters to you
Search
You can use keywords related to what matters to you and then create channels to you: either you can get a daily alert with tools such as Google News or FiltrBox, or you search on Twitter and you keep a column on your Twitter client. You then have a river of news in real time in what matters to you. And expect geotargeting options, like the local search offered on Google News, to be come automatic and ubiquitous.
Suggested Recommendations
As softwares are getting increasingly capable of identifying pattern, more tools are going to recommend you elements based on what you are looking for. If Amazon can do it when you buy or search something, why would it be different for news? Google Reader, Lazyfeed and even Feedly suggest you person to follow, article to have a look at or books to read.
Your friends
They know what you like and probably share interest with you, so who is better placed than them for providing you with what is relevant to you? Communities are fantastic providers of news and as people are increasingly sharing information between each other, we will get more and more news from the people around us. Would it be from Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, any place where people can send information. And as the number of people synchronizing their social media points of presence are increasing and that websites are more social than ever, this will become your biggest news provider.
I know that now some of you might talk about information overload, but the different tools mentioned provide enough filters and options to help you to get exactly what you want. And then for once, it is the mountain that it is coming to a man!
