New Suggested Users lists and Local Trends on Twitter

New Twitter features make it easier to discover new users to follow and trending topics in your area. In March Twitter introduced the Suggested Users list to help new users find interesting people to follow and get started on Twitter. Apparently some new users would abandon Twitter because they didn’t have anyone to follow and this new feature would improve Twitter’s usability and stickiness.

The algorithms that generate Suggested Users lists can now organize recommended users by topic (only English is currently supported): Art & Design, Books, Business, Charity, Cuisine, Entertainment, Fashion, Funny, Health, Music, News, Politics, Science, Sports, Staff Picks, Staff Picks for Haiti, Technology, Travel and Twitter.

Suggested Users lists aren’t just for new Twitter users: Click on the “Find People” link and then on “Browse Suggestions” and you might find some new interesting user to follow too.

Twitter staff members can handpick users and list them under a topic. Most lists will have the majority of accounts algorithmically selected, except for “Staff Picks” and “Staff Picks for Haiti”.

Another useful way of introducing new users to Twitter conversations is the Local Trends feature, that shows real time Trending Topics at a local scale. Users can currently set their Local Trends watch choosing from six different countries and a few cities, including London and São Paulo in Brazil.

Empowering users to get the most out of Twitter right from the start is one of the challenges Twitter is addressing with these new features. Suggested Users lists and Trending Topics refinements will only help making Twitter more relevant to new and old users alike.
