Twitter new advertising platform: Promoted Tweets

Twitter new advertising platform: Promoted Tweets

Twitter announced today the launch of Promoted Tweets, the advertising platform that makes Twitter monetization a reality.

The main difference between Promoted Tweets and other advertising platforms like Google AdWords, is that ads on Twitter are regular, organic tweets, that apart from appearing on top of Twitter search result pages, clearly labeled as “promoted”, share all the functionality of non-promoted tweets: They can be replied, retweeted and favorited.

Promoted Tweets could connect brands to consumers by combining the best features of social and search advertising, but the challenge for Twitter is to keep ads useful and relevant for users.

Tweet Quality Score is Resonance

Only one tweet will be displayed on the search result page, and Twitter will measure users’ interaction with the promoted tweet. Tweets must resonate with users: Generate mentions, retweets, favorites, replies, otherwise they will disappear from the Promoted Tweets box.

During the first stage of the release, only selected advertisers like Best Buy, Bravo, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, Starbucks and Virgin America will be able to promote their tweets.

More details on Promoted Tweets will be unveiled tomorrow at Chirp, the official Twitter developer conference.
