Topsee: Elite Generated Content Vs User Generated Content

Topsee: Elite Generated Content Vs User Generated Content

I attended yesterday the launch party of topsee, an iPhone application launched by lastminute.com that helps you to find the best things in the zone 1 in London. As they put it “topsee is compiled by an all-star cast of London bloggers, the real experts on the latest greatest places to go and things to see, the top foodie finds, cool bars, shopping spots and quirky sights”. I really enjoyed the event as it enabled people to talk not only to the PR and Marketing, but also to the tech team behind the app. I have to say the app is very well done, would it be for design, way to access the content and share it with people. They even have an offline mode to let tourist use the application once, stock the data, and then using again (which means they will not ruin themselves because of the roaming fees).

But I think the point of the app is somewhere else: all the suggestions/recommendations come from the best people blogging about London. This is an angle to beat the competition that would be Yelp or Qype: you already have so many places indicated on these platforms, but how to find the best ones, the hidden/unknown treasures waiting for you down the road? As the volume of user generated content is too high, we need a way to filter it: authority and competence are two efficient ways to do so. Moreover, the geo location feature makes it very easy to find things to do in a minute.

So this is how they can make a difference and as they joked about it “topsee users doubling every two days. In 66 days we have the whole world! Although it’s just possible they don’t all have iPhones”. Have a look at the video below to get a better idea on how it works.
