Catching the Wave: Google Social Media Offensive

Catching the Wave: Google Social Media Offensive

It seems common sense to say that Google has at some point missed the social media bandwagon, but it appears to become increasingly untrue. The company from Mountain View has introduced a social side on many of their products:

  • Sidewiki: This is an application on the Google Toolbar you can get for Firefox, IE and Chrome. It enables you to leave any form of comments in any webpage. This means that people can leave notes on the quality of restaurants, recommend a bar to go… or advertise for their business on their competitor website.
  • Google Profile: Yes, Google lets you create a profile that you can link to your other social media points of presence.
  • Google Reader: You can follow people using Google Reader and share articles with them, but you can also send articles to your favourite networks such as Facebook or Twitter.
  • Google Friend Connect: This widget will put more social features on your website or blog and foster the interactions between your readers, helping you to create a meaningful community.
  • iGoogle social gadget: Google has introduced social gadgets to its customized home page to let people share more information from there.
  • Gadget available for Gmail: As you can insert gadgets on Gmail, you can have Twitter, Facebook, Delicious an more on your Gmail, which increasingly looks like a platform.
  • Real time search: Google display popular trends of what is being on search… in real time. Google struggles on this one.
• YouTube social media sharing options: Share the videos you upload and like on Twitter, Facebook and Google Reader.
  • Updates on search engines for blogs and forums
  • Google Translation widget: Fighting Facebook Connect translation system as explained here.
  • Google Wave: Proclaimed as a revolutionary tool that will kill email, it enables communication, collaboration and sharing between users. This is the messiah at the moment as everyone on Twitter tries to get a copy (read invite) of the new bible.
